Kansas City dad charged in shooting that injured his daughter on Sunday night

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Jackson County prosecutors filed charges against a 29-year-old man in connection with a Sunday night shooting that injured his 1-year-old daughter. George R. Turrentine is accused of endangering the welfare of a child, armed criminal action, and a misdemeanor count for possession of marijuana.

A probable cause statement says that police responded to Research Medical Center just before 8 p.m. on Sunday where Turrentine told them he'd accidentally shot himself and his daughter.

As of Monday the little girl remained in intensive care and intubated at Children's Mercy Hospital in critical condition according to the court document. Doctors performed exploratory surgery to look for further injuries after finding the bullet had damaged her pelvis and spine.

Officers say the shooting occurred at apartments in the 1700 block of Concord Court. Turrentine said he was preparing to clean a 9 mm handgun and accidentally shot himself, the bullet going through his arm and striking his daughter.

The girl's mom told investigators that she and her daughter were playing on a bed when they heard a "pow" sound, and she realized both Turrentine and the girl were hit. They rushed to Research Medical Center following the shooting.

Investigators obtained a search warrant for the apartment and found the handgun, a 9 mm shell casing with blood on it, an AR-15 style rifle and drugs believed to be marijuana.

Prosecutors requested a $50,000 cash bond for Turrentine, he's currently in KCPD custody.
