KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Thursday night shooting at 87th and Overhill Drive left one man dead. Family told FOX 4’s Shannon O’Brien the victim is a 27-year-old man who was shot and killed outside of his parents’ house.
Witnesses say it was a very quiet night until about 9 p.m., when all of the sudden, people described automatic weapon fire breaking through the silence.
Some people say they hit the floor, afraid that the bullets would pierce their homes, and several people ran outside to see what was going on, including Donetta Knighten, who said she was sitting in her house and heard a barrage of gunshots, running outside to find it was her son, Gerard Knighten, who had been shot.
"He was getting shot while the guys were running down the street shooting at him. And then a black SUV drove up to pick them up after they were further down the street," she said.
"What did you do when you saw your son collapse?" asked FOX 4’s Shannon O’Brien.
"Ran to help my son. He was laid back in the seat. He never said anything after that,” Knighten said.
When asked about how she could be so calm, the mom said she was still in shock. Family members continued to show up on scene Thursday night, many were crying and in disbelief.
Police are still investigating, FOX 4 will provide updates about the suspects when that information is released.
