Beloved friend and family man killed in KCK; suspect held on $1.5 million bond

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Police have identified the victim in a homicide that occurred early Sunday in KCK, and said a suspect has been charged in connection.

Officers responded to a shooting in the 600 block of Central Avenue around 12:30 a.m. Sunday and found a man lying on the sidewalk with an apparent gunshot wound.

He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

The victim has been identified as 29-year-old Louis M. Scherzer, of Kansas City, Kan.

Police said on Tuesday that 18-year-old Efrain Gonzalez has been charged with 1st degree premeditated murder. His bond is set at $1.5 million.

A candlelight vigil is planned at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Organizers said they will meet at Ward Football Field and will walk to the Scherzer home.
