INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Joel Zillig, 32, of Independence, is charged in Johnson County, Kan., with robbery after police say he beat up a man from whom he was supposedly buying a cell phone and then stole the phone.

The crime happened the day before Thanksgiving.  Police say Zillig met a man and his wife at the Sam’s Club in Overland Park, 8300 West 135th Street, to buy an iPhone 7. Instead of paying for it, police say he punched the man repeatedly and stole the phone, then jumped in his car and took off.

Zillig’s bond was set at $50,000.
