KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Thursday afternoon shooting investigation closed the southbound lanes of 71 Highway at 85th Street.  The shooting happened at about 3 p.m., leaving one man dead.

All lanes on the highway have since reopened to normal traffic.

Officers were alerted to a car whose driver struck a concrete barrier on 71 Highway near 85th Street. The driver's black Cadillac was riddled with bullet holes, and police believe someone shot the victim while he was on the highway.

Police believe the victim lost control and crashed after he was shot, because he ended up along the barrier and there is extensive damage to his car beyond the bullet holes. He was found alone in the car.

Kansas City police say they know drivers were frustrated with the highway closure, but were doing what's necessary to investigate the shooting.

"This is a big scene. This is during rush hour, so we know that this caused a lot of inconvenience. One thing I’ll leave you with, if this were your family member, wouldn’t you want us to do everything possible to find out exactly what happened to them? That is the reason for the large scene today. We apologize for the inconvenience. But we want to solve this case," said Sergeant Kari Thompson.

The victim hasn't been identified yet. If you have information about this crime, call the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-TIPS.
