Independence fatal crash report becomes homicide investigation after police discover man hit by vehicle died from gunshot wound

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- Police initially called to a scene on a report of a fatal car crash are now calling the investigation a homicide.

Investigators were at the scene around 5 p.m. Sunday at the Hawthorne Place apartments at E. Dover Lane and N. Dover Drive in Independence.

Bystanders told police that the victim was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene. Upon further investigation, it was determined that the victim was killed by a gunshot.

Officers identified the victim as 23-year-old Phillip Diaz, of Independence.

Detectives are looking for a gray or silver-colored Pontiac in connection with the incident. The vehicle was driven by a black male and also had another black male passenger.
