KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The roof of a duplex partially collapsed during a fire Friday morning, but all residents in the building at Missouri and Troost escaped safely.

The ordeal began Thursday night at about 9 p.m. The couple in the upstairs duplex called 911, reporting that their ceiling fan had fallen onto their coffee table.

Firefighters responded and quickly put out the small fire associated with that.

Then, seven hours later, at about 3:45 a.m., residents called the fire department again about a fire in the roof at the same duplex. Firefighters had to fight the fire outside after the roof partially collapsed. For more than three hours firefighters sprayed water onto the roof where flames as high as 20 feet were seen by neighbors.

Residents on all sides of the duplex were evacuated from their homes.
