BELTON, Mo. -- Belton officers are investigating a hit-and-run incident that injured two people Sunday evening.

Police said two victims, a male and a female, were in the roadway when they were struck by a vehicle near Cedar Street and Main Street in Belton around 7:30 p.m. The vehicle left the scene.

Police did not give any details on the victims, except that they have been transported to an area hospital to be treated for significant injuries. Their conditions are unknown at this time.

Monte Burgess said he was washing dishes at his home near the scene when he heard the crash.

"Hollered at my family to call 911 and I come out and jumped the fence and went to try to help one of them. He was in pretty bad shape you know," Burgess recalled. "And the other one was leaning against a post over here with a messed up leg."

Burgess said he saw the vehicle hit the victims and then run into a ditch, then drove off.

"The girl with the messed up leg, she was talking alright, but the other that boy, he wasn't talking much," he said.

Witnesses described the victims as young adults, possibly teenagers.

Officers are searching for an older model white Ford Explorer with front end damage.

Anyone with information is urged to call Belton police at (816) 331-5522.
