Station General Manager

Reporting to our Corporate Group Operations, this role acts as General Manager of WDAF and is responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of the station. The best candidate will ensure financial goals are met, will establish long-range goals and strategies that will result in the growth and long-term viability of the Company, furthering the creative vision and execution of local news content and digital content being one content hub. Responsible for activities of all major station departments including: Sales, Digital Sales, Operations, Engineering, Traffic, Research, Programming, Production, News, Finance and Creative Services.

Responsibilities:

  • Drive results by developing and executing the station’s strategic and operating plans, achieve EBITDA goals consistent with Tribune Broadcasting financial and operating guidelines.
  • Create and support, on and off air, branding strategies across all platforms to insure audience and revenue growth
  • Provide for recruitment, management and development of leadership team, organized to optimize individual and team capabilities and goals, within an environment that encourages creativity and innovation.
  • Employ purposeful change management strategies to insure optimum staffing and resources.
  • Provide system of controls to insure that FCC regulations are followed, financial management, operating budgets, capital spending plans and other financial systems are within company guidelines and objectives.
  • Develop, identify and execute new business, revenue and community opportunities to provide for the growth and development of the Company. Cultivate relationships with major advertisers and community leaders to represent the station in the local market.
  • Make regular reports to President, Local Broadcasting; President and Chief Executive Officer and to Tribune Broadcasting executives on matters requiring their action

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance, broadcast/entertainment/communications/journalism or a related field and have equivalent related experience.
  • Prefer 15 or more years of experience in progressively responsible television management positions, preferably in a variety of market sizes.
  • Thorough understanding of the television industry and the role and jurisdiction of the Federal Communications Commission.
  • Ability to strategically plan and lead all the operations of the Station, including content produced for all platforms: cable, multicast, interactive, mobile, and other digital businesses. Must accurately forecast revenue, understand audiences across all platforms, and be engaged in forecasting future trends.
  • Experience in local content production and programming a plus.
  • Management skills necessary to manage diverse organization of employees. Leadership ability to represent company in public for diverse audiences.
  • Must be willing to submit to a background check
  • Must have unrestricted work authorization to work in the United States

REVENUE/BUDGETARY/STAFF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Authority and responsibility for an appropriate share of market revenues of $120 million and an operating expense budget to generate a strong return.
  • Authority and responsibility for over 100 employees across a wide variety of positions, experience levels and responsibilities.
  • Authority and responsibility for operations and content of channels on broadcast, cable, mobile OTT and other available platforms.

Newscast Supervising Producer

As part of the FOX 4 News team the newscast supervising producer oversees the collection and analyzes information about newsworthy events in the assigned news day-parts. The supervising producer assists with producer preparation of those stories for presentation in a live newscast and on multiple station platforms including fox4kc.com and social media sites.
Experience:
• BA/BS degree or equivalent degree in journalism or related field.

Requirements:

    15% – Contributes story ideas daily and works aggressively to increase traffic on web and mobile platforms. Serves as a leader within the newsroom, offering advice and assistance to other employees. Full discretion in this area.
    10% — Boothing newscasts. Executes newscast plan and manages timing, manages format to maximize meter performance, handles all breaking news within newscast. Full discretion in this area.

Traffic Manager

Responsible for all activities of the Traffic department including scheduling of commercials & programs, processing commercial copy and developing the Federal Communications Commission log. Responsible for hiring, training, and supervising staff. Must have previous media traffic experience. Knowledgeable in all aspects of traffic and an understanding of interdepartmental relationships involved in the overall operating of the department. Must have expertise in traffic-oriented computer systems, WideOrbit preferred. Must have management skills to train and direct a variety of work activities of the subordinate staff.

Requires the ability to maintain a positive working relationship with clients and traffic staff while adjusting the commercial format to maximize inventory utilization and company profit. Requires the ability to select, train, and effectively manage the staff, working under deadline pressure, to produce an accurately formatted daily programming schedule. Requires the use of independent judgment in decision-making process.

Requirements:

• Provides day-to-day supervision in the Traffic department (linear and digital) encompassing scheduling of commercials to maximize inventory utilization, developing and accurately formatting the Federal Communications Commission log and approving and processing commercial tapes by assigning work priorities.
• Coaching and counseling employees either directly or through subordinate staff, administering discipline, hiring and terminating as required.
• Provides sales management with required information on available inventory, rates, status of specials, etc.
• Reviews and evaluates traffic orders for completeness and accuracy, resolves scheduling discrepancies with traffic personnel.
• Researches and resolves daily log discrepancies.
• Identifies equipment needs of the department, recommends and participates in equipment purchasing decisions, requests equipment maintenance as needed.
• Frequent contact with various departments regarding scheduling-related matters. Occasional external contacts with buyers/agencies to clarify agency instructions and with rep firm sales staff to discuss order-related matters.
• Supervises traffic staff on a daily basis either directly or through subordinate staff members in scheduling commercials, developing FCC logs and approving commercial copy.
• Other duties and tasks as assigned by management.

Production Technician

A production technician at WDAF operates Master Control where we have three live streams. Our main channel 4.1, Antenna TV 4.2, and ‘This TV’ on 4.3. The production technician will also operate ENG live. This involves setting up microwave live shots, satellite shots, doing mic and IFB checks. The technician also operates the Wheatstone E-6 audio board for live newscasts and production. Master control operators are responsible for ensuring that the automation has the correct programs/commercials marked and ready for air, that all EAS tests (weekly/monthly) are aired correctly, that transmitter readings are taken, and will insert necessary information on the air such as Amber Alerts, Election tickers, Live weather tickers, and Snipes.

Promotions Producer/Videographer

The WDAF-TV/FOX 4 promotions producer/videographer produces promotional messages, spots, and elements in support of news and station programming. Creation, conceptualization, writing and editing for special and regularly scheduled promos and commercials, Organizing and coordination of promotional material in support of Creative Services Department initiatives. Demonstrated experience and knowledge of professional video cameras, DSLR cameras, field gear and modern lighting equipment. Experience with Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro required. Familiarity with MAC computer platform and Adobe based software products desirable. Must be able to communicate well and get along with people. Must be able to work flexible hours and shifts.
