Report: Mizzou Exit to SEC is “Inevitable”
The University of Missouri could be one step closer to leaving the Big 12 possibly as soon as this week, according to one media report.
According to a report in the New York Times, the school could announce their intention to leave the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference during a Missouri Board of Curators meeting in Kansas City later this week. The report says that the school’s exit to the SEC is “inevitable and imminent.”
A university official with direct knowledge of the situation says that after the school officially applies, there won’t be any problems gathering enough votes among SEC presidents to become a member.
The Board of Curators is expected to meet at UMKC on Thursday and Friday. Missouri’s exit from the Big 12 would leave the conference with just nine schools.
Officials with the University of Kansas say that they would not be interested in continuing the Border Showdown with Missouri if the Tigers leave the Big 12. In addition, Missouri’s exit to the SEC could put an end to the Big 12 basketball tournament being held in Kansas City.
