Since August, Independence Animal Services has been working around the clock to find the animals living there homes.

“It’s been a long three months,” said Aimee Wells, the manager of Independence Animal Services.  “But, it’s also been an exciting three months.  It’s always exciting to watch these little guys and older animals find homes.”

Wells said her shelter has saved the lives of 850 animals since it started competing in the ASPCA’s $100k Challenge this past summer.  In order to beat the other 49 shelters across the country, Independence Animal Services needs to find a few dozen more animals homes.

“Each one of these guys are special and we want them all to go into homes where they are going to be special,” said Wells.

So far, the shelter has won $5,000.  It’s eligible for an additional $25,000 and the ultimate prize of $100,000 only if it can beat the other shelters in online votes and pet adoptions.  Because it’s the only shelter in all of Kansas and Missouri competing, Wells urges anyone looking for a new companion to adopt from her shelter.

“It really is about finding all of those extra homes,” said Wells.  “People have opened up their hearts and their homes to add one more animal to their families.”

Independence Animal Services has until Halloween night to compete in the ASPCA competition.
If it wins, Wells says all of the money will be reinvested into the community through its low cost spay and neuter program.

In order to win $25,000, the shelter must get the most votes through the ASPCA’s Community Engagement vote.  You can vote once a day from each email address you have.  Click here to vote and then selected Independence Animal Services.

To adopt, visit the shelter at 875 S. Vista Ave in Independence, Mo, Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The shelter will stay open until 9:00 p.m. on Mon., Oct. 31 to get last minute adoptions completed.  Cats are free and dogs are $45 until then.

Pets from the Independence Animal Shelter are available for adoption on the weekends at PetSmart in Independence and Petco in Blue Springs.

For more information, contact the shelter at: (816) 325-7207.
