KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A woman struck and killed a crossing guard Friday morning as he walked to his morning crossing station at an elementary school.
Police said James R. Suman, 64, he was wearing his reflective vest when he was struck around 6:30 a.m. At the time, Suman was walking through the intersection at 7th & Van Brunt when he was hit by a green F-150 pickup truck.
It is unknown at this time what caused the accident or if speed was a factor. The female driver who hit Suman is in her fifties and was visibly shaken by the accident.
"She was on her way to work; she was not impaired. We did check her for that," said Sgt. Jim Fuller with the Kansas City, Mo., police department. "At this moment we don't know about speed on her vehicle. She was very distraught, visibly shaken."
Suman worked as a crossing guard at Gladstone Elementary School near St. John and Elmwood Avenue.
Police continue to investigate.
