An area barber is collecting turkeys for Thanksgiving at his barber shop.
Joey Thomas grew up in his mother's beauty salon, so it's no surprise he decided to make hair his business. But he also makes his neighbor's needs his business, too. Joey is collecting hundreds of turkeys for families who wouldn't be able to afford a Thanksgiving meal.
Along with his brother and mother, Thomas will hang out at Joey Cuts Barber Salon, located at 3914 Indiana Avenue for the next 24 hours waiting for people to drop off turkeys and non-perishable food items. Donations may be delivered throughout the night until 8 a.m. Wednesday.
This is the fifth year for the day Thomas has dubbed "Turkey Tuesday."
After collecting hundreds of turkeys, they'll distribute them to local charities like Operation Breakthrough and Harvesters and people in the neighborhood they know have fallen on hard times.
Thomas himself donated 20 turkeys himself and challenges the community to make at least one donation.
"I'm from the neighborhood," Thomas said. "I live in the neighborhood. My business is here. My foundation is here, so having a heart for the people is just second nature. Times are tough. There are people in need. If I'm able to give, why not give, so that's why I'm here.
