AFGHANISTAN — Fifteen-year-old Sahar Gul is recovering in the hospital after police said her husband’s family tortured her and forced her to live in a basement ‘toilet.’ Police located the girl after neighbors reported hearing her crying and moaning.

According to Baghlan police, the girl’s in-laws locked her in a basement bathroom for approximately five months, giving her little food and water. When rescued, the girl displayed scabs, bruises and burn marks. Police said some of her injuries were sustained by family members who burned the girl with cigarettes and used pliers to pull out chunks of her skin after she refused to become a prostitute.

Police said the girl’s mother-in-law and sister-in-law have been detained, but that the girl’s husband and father-in-law are on the run. Mohammed Zia, a senior police official in Baghlan, said police are searching for the men.
