LEAVENWORTH, Kan. — Fort Leavenworth is warning nearby residents and those downwind that they may smell another odd odor Tuesday morning.

On Monday, a chemical spill on Sunday involving the substance which gives natural gas its distinctive smell caused quite a stink over parts of the Northland.

As part of the disposal effort, the capsule containing the mercaptan will
have to be reopened. This effort will begin Tuesday, Jan. 10 around 9 a.m.
and may result in a sulfur odor in the local community.

The leak at Fort Leavenworth Sunday involved only the non-toxic mercaptan and officials say there was no natural gas leak.

Fort Leavenworth officials are working with Missouri and Kansas gas, energy
and environmental experts to contain the smell and dispose of the
concentrated additive.
