LIBERTY, Mo. -- Police ended a five-hour stand off in Liberty Wednesday morning using tear gas. Police tossed in a canister of tear gas through a window at Wilshire Apartments and then apprehended a man who had refused to come out of the apartment since 9 a.m.

Police said the 47-year-old man had recently been released from a Kansas jail. His mother called police Wednesday morning and said he was  acting erratic and may be suicidal.

Police went to the Wilshire Apartments shortly before 9 a.m. where the man lived. When they knocked on his door, police said the man threatened them.

The Wilshire Apartment complex is less than a mile away from Liberty High School. School officials issued a lock down. Officers also evacuated several residents at the apartment complex while they work toward a peaceful resolution.
