NORTH KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Firefighters rescued two families from their balconies at the French Quarter apartment complex Thursday morning. The apartments are located at Orleans Circle & Quebec in North Kansas City.

Firefighters received the call around 3:45 a.m. Thursday. When they arrived they could see heavy smoke and flames. Firefighters rescued one person from a hallway who suffered smoke inhalation. Two other families were rescued from their balconies. One father said it was a frightening ordeal.

“We just heard the alarms going off, and I just opened the door and saw a lot of smoke and everything was black,” Edgar Chavez said. “And I started thinking about how I was going to get my babies out. It was scary.”

Firefighters said the fire started in the basement, but the cause is still under investigation.
