SHAWNEE, Kan. -- Firefighters returned to the scene of a Shawnee apartment fire Friday morning after it began smoking again. On Thursday night, a three-alarm fire seriously damaged the Hampton Woods Apartments in the 16900 block of W. 67th Terrace.

The fire reportedly started in a basement apartment around 7:15 p.m. Firefighters at the scene said the first floor of the structure eventually collapsed into the basement. High winds then hampered the efforts of firefighters, as embers threatened to catch an adjoining building on fire.

There were no injuries reported, however 40 people were affected by the blaze. The American Red Cross is providing assistance. Twenty of the 50 units were destroyed.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
