STOVER, Mo. -- Hundreds of people gathered in the tightly-knit community of Stover for a candlelight vigil in memory of a child that police believe was beaten to death before being dumped on a highway in an attempt to cover it up.

Jamie Litton, 25, and her boyfriend, Thomas Presley, 21, are charged with second-degree murder in the death of Litton's son, three-year-old Blake Litton. According to police, Presley allegedly beat the boy to death, then tried to cover up the beating by staging a hit-and-run accident.

On Thursday evening, friends, family and strangers gathered for a candlelight vigil and balloon release to show support for the child's family and to take a stand against child abuse. Blake Litton's father, grandmother and other family members were on hand at the vigil.

"I wanted to make it all about Blake, and all about making communities aware that child abuse is not acceptable and we need to stop child abuse," said vigil organizer Jennifer Fahrer.

Jamie Litton and Thomas Presley are being held in the Morgan County Jail in lieu of $1 million bond.
