KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Crews from the Missouri Department of Transportation will be closing two lanes westbound I-70 on the Manchester Bridge over the weekend to repair deteriorating concrete - concrete that was laid down just last fall.
According to MODOT, a concrete overlay in the center lane of westbound I-70 on the Manchester Bridge is experiencing cracking and wear. The deterioration caught MODOT officials by surprise.
"That concrete overlay that we put on there, we put on this fall, and we've experienced cracking through the winter so we're going to replace that with an asphalt," said Tom Markway of MODOT.
Markay says that the I-435 southbound to westbound I-70 will also be closed, along with the exit ramp from westbound I-70 to the Manchester Trafficway.
"We're trying to inconvenience the traveling public as little as possible, by starting on Friday night and doing it on the weekend," said Markay. "The reason we're doing that is because we have I-70 down to one lane and the far right hand lane, and we want to limit the amount of vehicles that are trying to merge into I-70 which will help keep I-70 from backing up too much."
MODOT says that the work should be done by late Saturday or early Sunday morning. The department is working to figure out what caused the concrete in the center lane to crack so quickly.
