Two Seek Safety on Window Ledge During Apartment Fire
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Two people were transported to an area hospital Friday morning after their four-story apartment caught on fire. They are being treated for smoke inhalation and burns.
Firefighters said when they arrived at the apartment, located near Independence and Winner Road in Kansas City, Mo., two people had climbed out of their window and were on a ledge seeking safety.
Two others who were sleeping in a basement apartment were rescued by firefighters but were not injured in the blaze.
Firefighters believe the fire started in the top story apartment or in the one below. While investigators have not determined a cause, one man who lives in a lower-level apartment said he has his suspicions.
“I was laying down in bed. I heard the people upstairs fighting and arguing … and all of a sudden the house caught on fire,” he said. “I heard a bunch of crashing and stuff like that, and I looked up and our ceiling come straight down on top of me.”
The man said space heaters may be another possible cause of the fire.
While the seven or eight people escaped the blaze, the building suffered extensive damage.
