Man Charged in Deadly Shooting at 82nd & Wayne

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 19-year-old man has been charged with murder in the death of a Kansas City man. Jacob Smith faces second degree murder after Treavor Ownby’s body was found in a home at 82nd & Wayne on Friday, March 9. Ownby died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

A witness told Kansas City Police that he had information on a deadly shooting that happened at 82nd & Wayne and that the weapon used was in the trunk of his car. Police recovered a semi-automatic handgun that matched a round that was found at the homicide scene.

About 30 minutes later, 15-year-old Sierra Myers and 15-year-old Corrine L. O’Connor also went to police headquarters. The teens told police they were witnesses to the homicide. They were also identified as the missing juveniles that officers had looked for when the victim’s body was found.

Smith told police he shot  Ownby because he had threatened his family in the past. He is now being held in the Jackson County Jail.
