WASHINGTON —  A canine from Missouri receives top honor from The Humane Society of the United States. Hank, a great dane from Kansas City, Missouri, is the Valor Dog of the Year.

The awards celebrate the human-animal bond by honoring dogs who have exhibited an extraordinary sense of courage or resolve by heroically helping a person in need.

Hank shielded his owner during a situation involving domestic violence. His owner was viciously attacked with a hammer by her boyfriend. The dog provided enough of a distraction for the woman to escape.

Celebrity judges voted for Hank and he also received the highest number of votes from the public in the People’s Hero Award.

The winners will receive prizes from Bella Tocca Tags, Custom Glass Etching, and The HSUS’ online store, Humane Domain.
