KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Some neighbors are taking matters into their own hands after a deadly shooting in Westport. They are taking to the streets here in Westport in an effort to make sort of a mobile neighborhood.
John Pickett has lived in Westport for six years. He's organizing a patrol where volunteers will be paired up and walking the streets together after dark on the weekends. He says hopefully they can be an extra set of eyes and ears for police.
"We don't expect any vigilantism or anything like that just us getting together walking around in the Westport area if we see anything suspicious or out of the norm we will be calling the police in," Pickett said.
Police say extra officers will also patrol the area when they aren't busy on other calls. The summer saturation patrols may also start sooner. So far, Pickett says about 30 volunteers are willing to help the neighborhood.
They hope to start patrolling the neighborhood as soon as this weekend.
