KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- NASCAR is a familiar event on the Kansas City landscape, but now there's something new for race fans at the Kansas Speedway, as the new Hollywood Casino overlooking turn two expects a big boost in business thanks to this weekend's race.
The casino, which opened in February, expects about a 20 percent bump in business over the weekend. After a strong start, revenue at the casino dipped in March. But casino vice president and GM Bob Sheldon thinks it could hit the jackpot again this weekend.
"It's almost like another grand opening for us," said Sheldon. "Over the weekend we'll probably have over 100,000 people come out to the races on Saturday and Sunday."
An attraction at the casino is the patio area that overlooks the track. On Friday, afternoon crowds got to check out practice runs, but on race day the area will only be open to the casino's highest-paying customers.
The casino has brought in extra staff and security for the weekend. Sheldon estimates that the Hollywood Casino, Village West, the Legends and other attractions near the speedway could bring in close to $2 million over the weekend.
