GARDNER, Kan. -- April 20, or 4-20, is the de-facto national holiday for marijuana users, and law enforcement on both sides of the state line marked the occasion with a drug sweep.

Officers with several agencies went after indoor marijuana growing operations in Leawood, Overland Park and Lenexa in Kansas and in Raymore and Pleasant Hill in Missouri as part of "Operation Constant Gardener, Part II."

So far, authorities have served 10 search warrants, seized 43 plants, one pound of processed marijuana and a small amount of methamphetamine in addition to guns, a stolen trailer and ATV and around $13,000 in cash.

Johnson County Sheriff Frank Denning says that many people may not consider marijuana to be a hard drug, but he says that it's the number one most abused drug in the U.S., and he claims that it's a gateway to more serious crimes.

"Marijuana is linked to these other crimes," said Denning. "You're seeing stolen weapons, you're seeing stolen property, we're seeing crimes associated with personal violence."

The Johnson County Crime Lab processed more than 2,000 marijuana cases in 2011, more than all other drugs combined.

There is no word yet on how many people will face charges in Friday's sweep.
