Over the last couple of days, I’ve noticed some information trickling out that the 1st 4 months of 2012 are the warmest ever. I decided to do some research as far as how KC is faring in this process, and while NOT the warmest 1st 4 months of the year on record…it’s pretty darn close.

1st let’s look at the country as a whole. Click on all these graphics to make them larger.

Look to the far right hand side at the blue line going straight up past the 7°C number. That is our average temperature for the 1st 4 months of 2012. The BLACK horizontal line in the middle of the graph indicates the average temperature for the 1st 4 months of the year…which is about 40.1°. This year we are around 45.4°!

Now let’s get more specific into MO/KS…first graph represents MO.

Now let’s go to the KS side…

On the MO side this is the warmest start to any year in our record history. On the KS side the same is true…but it is very close! The year that is rivaling us is 1946. That between the MO side and the KS side is the 2nd warmest start to the year.

So what about KC…well an investigation into the numbers indicate that 2012 is the…wait for it…the warmest start to the year (1st 4 months). The year that has the same record, at least for the 1st 4 months is 1946 with an average temperature of 47.7°. Here in KC the average for the 1st 4 months is 47.65°. We’re 5/100’s of a degree short of tying the record, which in the weather world is really a tie with rounding up.

The NWS has published some additional details on all this. Here is their report.

By the way, if you go back and include October and November into the data, it would be the warmest OCT-April period in our weather record data!

So now you know.

Just saw this video of some nice dust storms in progress in AZ and the Phoenix area yesterday…take a look.!
