KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Memorial Day weekend ended on a tragic note as a man apparently drowned at a south Kansas City pool party.

According to witnesses, a man in his 20’s or 30’s slipped and hit his head at a pool at the Shadow Creek Apartments near 96th Place and Bannister Road around 7:00 p.m. on Monday evening. The witnesses say that the man then slipped into the deep end of the pool, and it took nearly five minutes for anyone to realize that he was drowning.

Witnesses say that a group of about 10 kids – aged 12-13 – tried to pull the man out of the pool with the help of an adult woman, but were unable to get him out of the water. He was finally removed from the pool around the time that paramedics arrived on the scene.

Police say that the man, who has not been identified, was taken to Research Medical Center where he later died.

According to authorities, many of the people around the pool at the time of the incident, including the victim, did not know how to swim.
