KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A woman born in Germany longed to meet her American father. After searching for more than 30 years, she finally got her life's dream.
Father's day is a time to honor your father. For many years, Joen Barbian couldn't do that because she didn't know who her father was. The only thing she knew about her dad was his name.
Donald Houser didn't know he had a daughter for 53 years. He fathered her while serving in the Army in Germany in the late 1950s.
"She always wanted to find him since she was younger and when she found out that he was in the states it has always been her dream to find him," said Joen Barbian.
Barbian says she didn't know where to look until someone told her to check out Facebook. She immediately signed up and typed his name and there he was. When she reached out to her dad he says he was blown away. His wife said her red flags went up.
"I thought this is a scam from way back," said Freida Houser, Donald's wife. "What are they wanting and what are they going to do?"
All Barbian wanted to do was meet her dad. After sending him her birth certificate and several Facebook messages, Barbian took an 18 hour trip from Frankfurt Germany to Kansas City on June 14. Despite the language barrier, both daughter and dad have been communicating with love. There's a lot of hand holding and hugs between the pair.
Houser says he loves all of his daughters and gave them lockets with his picture in it to make sure they know.
