OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Neighbors at an Overland Park apartment complex are remembering the sad details of what happened to a six-year-old child who they found underwater at their apartment complex pool on Friday evening

According to authorities, the child apparently went under in a pool at the Four Winds Apartments at 80th and Perry in Overland Park around 8:00 p.m. Neighbors say a girl brushed up against the boy as he was underwater and she sensed something was wrong.

"She swam over and she felt something touch the bottom of her foot," said Michele Munoz, a neighbor .

The child was on life support for several days, but died when he was removed from it.

"I feel so sad about what happened to the little boy," said Debra Zaragoza-Contreras, another neighbor."Here comes my grandson screaming 'Oh my God, Grandma! A little boy's in the pool!'"

Debra ran down to the pool to see if she could help.

So did Michele. She says several people helped pull the child out of the water.

"She looked down and there was the little boy in the water and she grabbed him up and out of the water," Michele said. I guess that's when the dad and my nephew helped pull him out too and they started performing CPR on him."

When firefighters arrived on the scene, bystanders were still trying to save him with CPR.

"I have two little ones and I couldn't even imagine what they're going through," said Michele, who has been thinking and praying for the family every day.

This was the second drowning call in Overland Park Friday night. An adult male died at the Econolodge Pool in the 7500 block of Shawnee Mission Parkway earlier Friday evening.

Overland Park Fire wants to remind people to be extremely vigilant during this summer swimming season. Swim with a buddy and parents need to keep a watchful eye on children in the pool at all times.
