INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- Police are investigating after a man found a body lying in front of a duplex in the 10400 block of E. 15th Street in Independence, Mo.
Michael Foster said he checked Ron Mills' vital signs and determined he was dead and called police. Foster says the man looked like he had been beaten. The family of the man said they believe he was murdered.
"He had moderate to severe bruising," Foster said. "He also had blood coming out of his nose. His left eye was smashed almost totally in."
Foster is a former nurse's assistant and says he worked with a forensic pathologist at a Wichita hospital.
"I watched a lot of autopsies, and I watched a lot of police bring in cadavers," he said. "This man didn't fall down, this man was beaten."
Jerry Mills is the victim's cousin and worries police made a snap judgement because his cousin was known to drink.
"The guy couldn't have fell over dead, there's no way not if he's got bruises on him and beat up in the face," Mills said.
A police spokesperson said that detectives have made no determination and they're waiting for the autopsy. Autopsy results can take six to eight weeks. The family of Ron Mills says the investigation shouldn't wait.
