KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A boat accident is under investigation at the KC Zoo. A boat carrying several people collided with a bridge on Saturday morning.
Fire crews and EMS responded to the scene. Four children were taken to the hospital by ambulance with minor injuries.
"Through operator error, hit our passage way and it cause some minor injuries to our guest who were riding the boat at the time," said Dr. Kirk Suedmeyer with the KC Zoo.
A mother who was on the boat at the time agrees with the doctor that the accident was definitely caused by operator error. Misty Clough says she knew something didn't seem right from the beginning. She said the boat was not in the right position to miss hitting the bridge. As it turns out, she was right.
Four of her children were taken to the hospital following the boat accident. The youngest has a cut under his eye that he needed stitches for. Another child has a big bump behind his ear. Her daughter has bruised ribs and the oldest has whiplash. Clough says they had two separate accidents.
"When we hit the bridge, the driver did fall to the floor and the boat stalled for a second and then as everyone was trying to stand up is when the boat hit a second time," Clough said. "That one was the worse, that is when people got jerked the most and got hit."
She said people realized what happened and starting helping one another. They tried to help those who were hurt stop bleeding.
Clough said she will take her kids on the boat again, but it will be no time soon. She also says not before the zoo looks into possibly widening the passageway under the bridge.
