Royals Edge White Sox 2-1, Win Series

CHICAGO — Jeremy Guthrie pitched a beauty, and the Kansas City Royals escaped with a 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field on Wednesday night.

Guthrie (1-3, 5.18 ERA) got his first win since May, and his first win as a member of the Royals. He gave up five hits in 8 scoreless innings, striking out six and walking none.

Third baseman Mike Moustakas opened up the second inning with his 17th home run this season, a solo blast to right that gave the Royals (47-63, 26-31 away) a 1-0 lead.

Catcher Salvador Perez extended the lead to 2-0 with a solo jack in the fourth, his sixth HR this season.

White Sox rookie lefty Jose Quintana (4-2, 2.78 ERA) gave up two runs on five hits in 7 innings, fanning five and walking two.

In the ninth, Royals closer Greg Holland (3.35 ERA) surrendered one run on two hits, but also struck out a pair en route to his third save.

The Royals are now 5-4 against the White Sox (60-50, 30-25 home) this season.

Lefty Will Smith (2-4, 6.00 ERA) starts against Orioles lefty Wei-Yen Chen (10-6, 3.46 ERA) for game one of four in Oriole Park at Camden Yards on Thursday night.
