Royals Top Orioles 7-3
BALTIMORE — Alex Gordon hit a pair of home runs, and the Kansas City Royals cruised to a 7-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles in Oriole Park at Camden Yards on Saturday night.
After a three-hour rain delay, the Royals unleashed a HR Derby on the Orioles and pitcher Chris Tillman. Tillman (5-2, 3.40 ERA) gave up six runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings, striking out five and walking two.
Gordon blasted Tillman’s second pitch to left center to give Kansas City (49-64, 28-32 away) an early 1-0 lead. Catcher Salvador Perez hit a two-run HR in the second that pushed the lead to 3-0.
Starter Luis Mendoza (6-8, 4.37 ERA) earned the win, giving up three runs on seven hits in 6 innings, fanning four and walking two.
Royals slugger Billy Butler continues to have an amazing year, belting his 24th HR of the year with a solo shot to right center in the third inning. Right fielder Jeff Francoeur stole home in the sixth, and Gordon jacked his second HR of the game in the seventh inning to put the Royals up 7-0.
The Orioles (61-53, 29-28 home) answered with a three-run rally inning, but the damage was already done.
The Royals go for another series win on Sunday afternoon, when lefty Bruce Chen (8-9, 5.51 ERA) takes on right-handed pitcher Tommy Hunter (4-7, 5.55 ERA) for game four in Oriole Park at Camden Yards on Sunday afternoon.
