MINNEAPOLIS -- A picture of a man and his best friend is getting worldwide attention. You've probably seen the picture of the man floating in Lake Superior with his dog online.
John Unger took on a big responsibility when he adopted his Schoep.
"He's my daily life," Unger said.
For the last 18 years, he's had a constant companion.
"It's a comfort for me having him this close," he said.
Time is taking its toll. The Shepherd mix has lost his sight. He also has arthritis. The pair finds peace swimming in the lake.
"There are lots of people who have pets, lots of people who have dogs, but these two really love each other," he said.
Unger says he's glad his dog can get some relief in the water.
"I know it's just taking away the pain," he said. "I can only give him what I can. He's always given me his all."
Unger says he knows he and his dog can't be together forever.
"I hope he passes in his sleep. Doesn't everyone want their loved ones to pass peacefully?"
People around the world say they've been so moved by the picture they've been calling Schoep's vet offering to pay for the dog's medication and treatment.
