Man Faces More Charges for Death of Infant
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 42-year-old Kansas City man now faces a charge of 2nd degree murder for the death of a 5-month-old baby.
Keith Nelson, 42, had already been charged with Assault 1st Degree and Endangering the Welfare of Child in the death of five-month-old Za’Vion Dunmore. Those charges were also upgraded to 1st Degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Abuse of a Child.
In March, the baby was taken to the hospital and a CAT scan revealed injuries consistent with head trauma.
Prosecutors say that Nelson told Kansas City Police different stories about what happened while he was caring for the baby. Nelson said the baby slipped from his grasp and struck its head on a vanity.
According to court records, Nelson was previously convicted in Jackson County of endangering the welfare of a child in 2002, and was sentenced to four years in prison.
