Prairie Fire Developers Seek $100M in Tax Incentives

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Developers of a retail-residential project say that they are ready to break ground in December - but first they want the city of Overland Park to approve $100 million in tax incentives.

Developers say that the Prairie Fire project, set to be located along 135th Street between Lamar and Nall, is expected to attract visitors from a 300-mile radius. The project is set to include major retailers like REI, the Fresh Market, Pin Stripes (a bowling alley and Italian restaurant) and Cinetopia - a 21-screen movie theater.

The primary tenant of the development would be the American Museum of Natural History, with a museum space that will showcase traveling exhibits from the larger Natural History  Museum in New York.

The project also includes nearly 600 high-end apartment units.

There will be a public hearing on the project on Monday night, and the City Council is expected to vote on the tax incentives in November.
