Child Sexual Assault Suspect Escapes from Transport Car in Lawrence

LAWRENCE, Kan. — A man accused of sexually assaulting a child escaped from police custody Monday morning, according to Lawrence police.

Deon Gregory Routt, 22, from Colorado Springs was being transported through Lawrence by a private security company.

At about 5:30 p.m., the driver of the vehicle stopped to check on one of the prisoners. While the vehicle was stopped, Routt jumped out and started running southeast from the area of 23rd and Louisiana in Lawrence.

Police and Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies brought in dogs and searched the area for several hours.

Routt’s description:

  • African American
  • 22 years old
  • 5’5″ tall
  • 140 pounds

Police say if you see him, call 911.
