INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Some new businesses are coming to the near-empty land on the southwest corner of interstates 479 and 70 in Independence.

The Kansas City Star reports construction will begin in may on a Stony Creek Inn and conference center. A Pizza Ranch restaurant is also coming.

And it’s about time. The city had high expectations for 200-acre development when it was financed for $72 million in 2004. So far, only a handful of businesses, including Bass Pro Shops, have set up shop there. As a result, the city of Independence is sitting in debt.

The Inn will have 165 rooms and 20,000 square foot conference room. It’s expected to open in the spring of 2014.
