No. 16 Mizzou Rocks Appalachian St 72-56
COLUMBIA, Mo. — An outmatched Appalachian State Mountaineers squad never obtained a single lead on Saturday afternoon, as the 16th-ranked Missouri Tigers sailed to a 72-56 victory at Mizzou Arena.
Missouri (6-1, 4-0 home) opened the game with a 7-0 run and never looked back. The Tigers took a whopping 39-15 lead with 1:45 left in the first half, and led 39-21 at the break.
Appalachian State (1-6, 0-4 away) shot 25% in the first half, and struggled to narrow the gap for the rest of the afternoon. With 6:00 to play, the Tigers took a 61-36 lead on a high-flying dunk by senior forward Laurence Bowers. Bowers’ jam was preceded by a no-look pass from junior guard Phil Pressey.
Mizzou crushed Appalachian State on the boards, outrebounding the Mountaineers 41-26. The Tigers lost the turnover battle again however, racking up 17 turnovers to Appalachian State’s 15.
Bowers led the Tigers with 23 points, and Mizzou shot 49.2% from the field. Sophomore forward Jay Canty led the Mountaineers with 29 points.
