KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Kansas City company is marking the start of 2013 by helping a family solve a problem most of us will never have to face. Schloegel Design and Remodel is giving a brand new bathroom to the Porter family.

The Porter family won the remodel as part of the Big Splash Giveaway, a contest, sponsored by Schloegel, that every year helps a family with a special needs child redesign their bathroom to accommodate a wheelchair.

"It's amazing the number of children who can't even get into a bathroom because the doors are too narrow so they literally have to be picked up and carried in," said company owner Jake Schloegel.

The Porter family, including 10-year-old Simone who has cerebral palsy, was one of eight families nominated for the contest. Mom Sheila Porter said she cried when she learned they'd won the bathroom makeover because she knew the difference it would make in her family's life.

"Right now the doorway is too narrow for her to get her wheelchair in and we have to physically pick her up and carry her into the bathroom," said Sheila Porter. "She's getting older and she doesn't want us in the bathroom with her when she's showering and you want to be able to give her that privacy."

Construction on the old bathroom starts this week and should be completed by mid January.
