ATCHISON, Kan. -- Hundreds of people gathered in Atchison Tuesday to say goodbye to a friend -- and to help her family through a trying time.

Fifteen-year-old Desirae Crossland died Sunday after a car accident. Her sister, Felicity Crossland, 18, and friend, Kelsey Essig, 18, were also inside the car.

Felicity was driving and lost control going southbound on US 73/K 7. The girls were trapped inside the car upside down in a freezing pond.

Felicity felt it was important to give a friend's voice, so she organized a vigil at their Atchison home.

"I wanted a place for them that was safe to light a candle and say everything they loved about Desirae," she said.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation by the Kansas Highway Patrol.
