KANSAS CITY, Mo. -  It turned the water in all the fountains blue for some time in perhaps the biggest event Kansas City hosted in 2012: the MLB All-Star Game at Kauffman Stadium.

But the game was preceded by a dismal Royals season.  It unfortunately, was not their time last season, and that saying goes for Chiefs football.

The team's losing record was so bad, frustrated fans started recording songs about it.  By the end of the season, Rommeo Crennel was out as head coach.

But before that announcement, another headline rocked the Chiefs organization.  Linebacker Jovan Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend and then shot himself at the Chiefs practice facility in front of coaching staff.  The story was one of Fox4KC.com's top page views.

That, along with the murder of Bethany Deaton a bizarre religious sexual cult, coverage of a tornado that touched down in Branson and the end of Hostess.

But when one door closes, another one opens, or many in this case.

Crowne Center's SEA LIFE Kansas City Aquarium opened its doors, and so did neighboring LEGOLAND Discovery Center.

Also, a casino made for the lights of Vegas called Hollywood Casino, opened at the Speedway in KCK.

Finally, the metro has another rising star.  Tate Stevens' country style wowed the judges and America on Fox's X-Factor to let him bring home the title.

But while there's a lot that's happened last year, 2013 has a kick to it too.

Nikita the polar bear, won't be swimming alone for long at the Kansas City Zoo. Berlin, a female polar bear, will be joining him by early February.

Also, the anticipated penguin exhibit at the zoo is scheduled for completion late summer.

If all that sounds too cold for you, Worlds of Fun is celebrating 40 years and, an expansion to Oceans of Fun.

Meanwhile, Schlitterbahn, is touting the opening of the tallest and most extreme water slide ever built.

While construction of that slide nears completion, work begins on the new street car system downtown voters approved.

You'll have to dodge more construction when the new IKEA store off I-35 in Merriam breaks ground in the summertime.

If all that construction talk gives you a headache, take in the music at the first International Jazz Appreciation month in April in the city some call the birth place of jazz.

You could also call it the city of diehard Chiefs football fans.  The team begins the search for the next head coach this year.

The Royals push to make a better name for themselves in baseball.

Last year, Budget Travel magazine named Kansas City one of its top 10 budget travel destinations for 2012.
