KANSAS CITY, MO -- FOX 4 Film Critics Russ Simmons and Shawn Edwards bring their exclusive reviews for the films "Frankenweenie" and "Compliance," out for downloading Tuesday, January 8.

Tim Burton's black-and-white, stop-motion animated spoof "Frankenweenie" is his Valentine to old horror movies, particularly those made by Universal Studios in the 1930s. Visually, it's top notch.
There is nothing more pure than the love between a boy and his dog. And there is perhaps no one has playfully inventive and creative as Tim Burton. Inspired by the Frankenstine story "Frankenweenie" is a delightful stop-motion animated feature in black-and-white and 3D. Talk about cool. Easily one of the best animated features last year. 'Frankenweenie" is the type of creation that will be around for generations. Simply dazzling.
The story is based on a short film Burton made back in the day...and it shows. While very imaginative, "Frankenweenie" seems padded. Plus, if you don't know the old movies, you probably won't get many of the humorous references. Be forewarned that it's too intense for young kids.
"Frankenweenie" features some neat new extras including a look behind-the-scenes at the set and props used in filming and an all-new original short, Captain Sparky vs. the Flying Saucers.

Based on a true story, "Compliance" tells the tale of a manager at a fast food place who goes against her own better moral judgement because she thinks an authority figure orders her to do so.
The acting is terrific. Top notch in fact. Based on real criminal cases, this edgy film is a trulu unsettling drama. It's a very gritty watch that's dialogue heavy but intense.
Though the movie is awkwardly paced and edited, the strong performance from character actress Ann Dowd is getting some awards buzz. The moral questions the movie raises elevates its interest level considerably.
Maybe not the most entertaining movie but it's interesting.
