INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- Drama students at Van Horn High School are making history. They are putting on the school's first ever full-scale musical with a complete orchestra since the school became part of the Independence School District.  There were so many choices, but the students picked The Sound of Music.  Junior Gabby Goering is cast as Maria.

"I love being able to be someone I'm not," said Goering.  "It's just really exciting to be able to go and do things that you may not be able to do in life."

For nearly three months, the students and first year drama teacher, Netty Doyle, have been rehearsing, practicing the blocking and creating the set.

"More and more kids every week ask me, what's this i hear about a musical? I can get involved?" said Doyle.

Doyle says the entire school is getting involved.

"It's not just theater kids, but a lot of different kids have gotten together to help put this together and make sure it is a success," said Doyle.
The students will perform the musical February 21-23.
