OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- A metal awning collapsed Thursday evening in Overland Park, Kan., trapping one person underneath it.

It happened just before 8 p.m. at a condominium at West 95th Street and Perry Lane. According to building officials with the city of Overland Park, the weight of the snow was more than 2,000 pounds.

"With the amount of snow we've had over the last week or so and the accumulation from the wet, heavy snow we had in the last snowfall, there's a lot of structures with a lot of heavy weight on top of it due to that snow," said Alan Long, Overland Park Fire Dept.  "Just be aware of your surroundings be aware of any kind of overhang especially a flat roof with that much snow on it. That is a lot of weight up there."

It has been the third awning collapse at the complex since the first snowstorm more than a week ago.

One person was hurt in the incident and was taken to the hospital with head injuries. They are expected to be OK.

Emergency officials said the neighborhood has nearly 30 awnings similar to the one that collapsed. They planned to canvas the neighborhood to tell people of the danger.
