KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Several cars were damaged in Kansas City, Kan., on Saturday after a carport collapsed on top of them. Also trapped in the rubble was the driver of a bob cat who was clearing snow.
It all happened near Woodview Ridge Drive and Roe Lane in KCK. Witnesses said they were concerned for the bob cat driver's safety.
"We didn't hear anything about the guy for at least 10 minutes," one witness said. "Then somebody by chance talked to him and then we could hear the guy. He was like, 'Yeah, I'm all right'"
Another witness said the bob cat driver "had no time to react. He added that "it just came crashing down on him."
Besides the bob cat, about six cars were heavily damaged in the collapse. The cost of damages is estimated at $85,000.
It's unclear at this time if heavy snow caused the carport to collapse or if the bob cat hit something to make it come crashing down. FOX 4's Sharita Hutton said firefighters urged the apartment complex to clear the snow off other carports in the area, but as of 5 p.m. Saturday, that had not been done.
Earlier in the week, heavy snow was the cause for several roof collapses throughout the metro. No injuries were reported in those incidents.
