KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A man was seriously injured Monday morning, reportedly losing both his legs when he became caught in a machine used to shred tires.
Emergency crews were called to 4401 Gardner, which is the address of ABC Tire in Kansas City, Mo., a company that shreds and recycles tires so the materials can be used on playgrounds and other surfaces.
At first, fire officials reported the man lost a hand, but later amended their information, and said both his legs were crushed up to his thighs.
The company said Marcos Jaimes was hurt in the accident. He was out of surgery and in intensive care Monday afternoon.
The accident happened at about 10 a.m.
"An employee had a terrible accident, where he fell into a tire shredder. He fell feet-first and had two limbs separated from his body," said James Garrett, Chief Public Information Officer for KCMO Fire Department.
Garrett described the shredder as attached to a belt. He said there were some reports that the man was already inside the machine when it started. Others said he fell into it.
Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials were on the scene to investigate.
