KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Last week it was the Big 12 Conference and now Kansas City police are preparing for huge crowds trekking to town for the NCAA Men's Tournament.

A record number of more than 19,000 people packed the Sprint Center for the Big 12 Championship game Saturday night at Sprint Center -- and police are expecting huge crowds to return for Friday and Sunday's NCAA games.

Amid all the fun, officers say it's inevitable that would-be criminals will also be on the prowl.
That's why Kansas City police will be in uniforms and undercover, looking for all kinds of bad guys targeting basketball fans including con artists selling fake tournament tickets to thieves breaking into cars.

"Anytime you get a lot of people coming in to town for big events sometimes our property crimes have a tendency to spike. You get folks who aren't used to securing their stuff in their car, " said Sergeant Scott Simons.

Simons adds the department's officers will be on foot, on bicycles and of course, in their patrol cars during the NCAA tournament.

Officers will also be on the look out for drunk drivers.

Last Friday and Sunday, during the Big 12 Conference, police arrested more than 40 people for driving under the influence.
