KANSAS CITY, Mo. - It's been one month Tuesday since the deadly explosion and fire on the Plaza caused by a natural gas line break.

Building owners around ground zero said they're in the assessment phase with insurance adjusters to see if any damage was done to their buildings by the blast.

Spencer Schere was a tenant at the neighboring building south of JJ's. He said he and his son are working from his home.

"The paperwork that we needed we do have and it is spread all over my office at home and my son works upstairs and it's difficult," Schere said.

But Schere said he feels fortunate they have insurance, saying the owner of the building required tenants to have it.

Schere said it'll probably take about three months before next steps are taken.

The friend of a building owner to the east of JJ's, said that building is a total loss. Ron Larson said insurance coverage is bleak for his friend.

"I think most people have insurance that covers you know for minor things that happen but when it comes to total devastation and total loss, insurance companies are going to be fighting this out a little bit," Larson said.

Other owners nearby have broken windows in their storefronts.  They too, tell Fox 4 they are in the assessment phase.

But many building owners said the damage is small compared to the human loss of Megan Cramer, the JJ's employee who died in the explosion and fire.
